Want to change your love life? Change your home, first.
Advice from Dr. Michelle R. Callahan
One of the things you can do to kick off your plan to change your love life is a home makeover. Take the time here to consider what in your environment at home, work, or school might be keeping you locked into your dating type, or what might be discouraging or distracting you from making the changes you desire. Then get rid of it! Examples of distractions include old photos, music that reminds you of the last man you dated, alcohol, or even certain “comfort” foods. For example, if you are trying to transform from Ms. Sex Machine, you might want to get rid of the things around your home that make you or your date immediately think about sex or that encourage you to jump into the sack sooner than you should. Be very open-minded, and look for the symbols, personal items, books, mementos, or other things that make you feel stuck in old habits that you want to break or that remind you of the unhappier times in your life that led you to become mistyped in the first place. Whatever you find, toss it or pack it up in a box. Store it somewhere out of sight and out of mind. If you have to, give it to someone else to hold on to, but don’t have anything around you that will distract you or encourage you to fall back into your type’s old habits. If Mr. Wrongs are still hanging around you trying to pull you back into your old life, erase their numbers from your cell phone. Put away those old photos and love letters. Clear a space for the new you!…
In addition to eliminating certain things from your environment, I want you to make a shopping list of things that will make your environment more supportive of your desired changes. This list could include adding things like artwork, new music, scented candles, fresh flowers—you name it. Make the list here or on a piece of paper in your journal. Then get out there and pick up what you need. I want the places where you live and work to be as comfortable, positive, and supportive as possible. I want you to feel encouraged and inspired in your personal space. Add things that represent the woman you strive to be.
